Why...?
Just read the latest newsletter from someone who writes about writing. But, today was different. He let us know he’s a Christian.
He did that because a subscriber had asked him, "Are you a Christ-follower? I think I've heard you reference God's word a few times. So I was simply curious. I am a Jesus person myself, so some of your words have piqued my curiosity!" and he felt he needed to respond by saying yes.
He went on to write about how, during online masterclasses, people will talk about mistakes they’ve made in their businesses. This seemed to lead him to relate that to his active religious practice.
Obviously he felt he needed to address this topic.
Personally, I believe the business environment goes by the same guidelines as those in "polite company." I grew up in Kentucky (Southern enough!) where you don’t bring up religion and politics in conversation unless it’s directly relevant!
What is with the need these days to proclaim your “faith” willy-nilly?
I have to wonder about the motivation of people who feel it is necessary to proclaim their Christianity these days. Will they refuse to do business with me if they find out I'm an atheist or because of my Jewish last name?
Should I broadcast that I'm an atheist, a former Catholic with 14 years of parochial schooling, who follows the Four Agreements and Stoicism? Or, that I believe not all who claim to be Christians are actually followers of Christ or practitioners of that form of Christianity?
Conversely, does hearing someone announce their Christianity make me think twice? Honestly, today, yes. I wonder if they're just plain ol' traditional Christians or are they letting me know they're Christian Nationalists?
Get my drift?
Who do you want to do business with? Who do you want to do business with you?
Back to the newsletter, IMO I thought it was completely inappropriate to bring religion into the business environment.
What’s your opinion, humble or not?
